Agartala is the capital of the Indian state of Tripura and second largest city in North-east India after Guwahati, both in municipal area and population. The city is the seat of the Government of Tripura. Agartala is one of the fastest developing cities of India. Agartala is a derivative of two words, namely Agar, a valuable perfume and incense tree of genus Aquilaria, and the suffix Tala, meaning underneath,a reference to the density of Agarwood trees in the region.
The city is governed by the Agartala Municipal Corporation.Agartala lies on the bank of the Haora River and is located 2 km from the Bangladesh Border. Agartala is India's third international internet gateway after the ones in Mumbai and Chennai. Agartala city consists of many Paras, which means "locality" in Bengali. Each collections of neighbourhood or para is usually also a municipal ward or division. Agartala is also known for its tribal festivals like Kharchi, and Garia Puja. The local tribal language 'Kokborok' is widely spoken and is one of the primary means of communication.
Geography
Agartala is situated on a plain along the Haora River, though the city also extends to the low-lying hills on its northern parts.Agartala, the capital of Tripura, is situated along 23° 45'- 23° 55' N latitude and 91°15'- 91°20' E longitude, in the flood plains of the Haora River

As per 2011 Census, the population of the city is 944,226.
Administration
The Agartala Municipal Corporation or AMC is the municipal body which governs and maintains the city of Agartala, the capital of the Indian state of Tripura and is the second-largest city in North-east India. This civic administrative body administers an area of 76.5 km2. The Municipal Corporation consists of councillors elected by the residents of the city. The city is divided into municipal wards and each ward elects a councillor to the Council.
