Ajmer is one of the major and oldest cities in the Indian state of Rajasthan.Ajmer got its name from name from 'Ajay Meru' or the invincible hill. It is located at the centre of Rajasthan and is an important tourist spot. Ajmer is surrounded by the Aravalli Mountains. It is the base for visiting Pushkar (11 km), an ancient Hindu pilgrimage city, famous for the temple of Lord Brahma.
Ajmer had been a municipality since 1869 and selected as one of the heritage cities for the HRIDAY - Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana and Smart City Mission schemes of Government of India. Ajmer is also the base for visiting Pushkar about 14 kms. away. The abode of Lord Brahma the Pushkar lake is a sacred spot for the HIndus, where they take a dip especially in the month of Karthik and considered spiritually motivated.
Geography
Ajmer is in the northwest of India and is surrounded by the Aravali Mountains. It is situated on the lower slopes of the Taragarh Hill of that range. It co-ordinates at 26.4499°N 74.6399°E.

The city is spread over an area of 55.76 sq. km.

The population of Ajmer city as per 2011 census is 5,42,321.
Administration
The Ajmer Municipal Corporation (AMC) oversees and manages civic infrastructure of the city wards.Ajmer Development Authority (ADA), Ajmer Municipal corporation (AMC) are responsible for development qand maintenance of the city.
